More than a mile wide and a half inch deep
July 8, 2009
Story ideas are flowing in from the ASNE fellows….and it’s an impressive range of topics and angles and sources. (Check out Twitter #ASNEKent09 for some of the great ones!)
The best, I’m finding, are not a mile wide and a half inch deep. They don’t attempt to hit the surface of every conceivable angle the topic could have. They suggest a single focus and maybe even an unusual angle, as HL suggested earlier. They also have experts — primary sources a student reporter could find in the community — a doctor, lawyer, law enforecement official, college prof.
And they could show readers why they should care and give them information they won’t get anywhere else. They localize and “teen-ize.”
Keep ‘em coming!
