Love the Multimedia (Rich Media now, I guess)
July 9, 2009
I use several of these presentations in my journalism class back home, and it is a great way to show multiple aspects of media and teach students about telling stories. Here are some links that I use:
Final Salute: This is a piece that Jim Sheeler won a Pulitzer for, and it covers what happens to the family and friends of a soldier who is not coming home…much like the one we watched in class.
Marlboro Marine: Luis Sinco is the man who took the picture of the Marlboro Marine, and he did some follow up stories on who he is and what happened to him since he was away at war.
These might be too serious, too real and too sad for students, but they are great examples to possibly reference.

Thanks, Karen. I can’t wait to use these.

Karen, Did you happen to see Jim Sheeler when he spoke at a JEA convention? Was that the Denver spring convention a few years ago? I don’t remember when. I just remember hearing him speak and being mesmerized by his storytelling ability.

Susan,
I did get to see him at the JEA convention. I loved it then, and that is why I started using the project the Rocky put together in my class. I watched how much it impacted my students, and that was enough to tell me to incorporate it. I also saw Luis Sinco at the Anaheim JEA convention, so I picked up his story as well.
